Prince is coming to the North Charleston Coliseum March 30th! Whether you love him or hate him, I believe we can all agree on the fact that Prince achieved the “American Musical Dream” by creating three generations of top charting music. And to think he produced, wrote, and recorded most of his work all by himself! So in tribute to Prince’s Charleston debut, I would like to share some fun trivia.

1.	Prince owns his own studio and record label. He also writes, produces,
Records, and plays most of the instruments on his albums.
2.	Prince has had over thirty top 40 hits including: “Little Red Corvette”, “When Doves Cry”, “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Raspberry Beret”, “Cream”, “Kiss”, and “U Got the Look”.
3.	He has had 10 albums go platinum.
4.	He won an Academy Award for the movie “Purple Rain”
5.	Prince has won 7 Grammy awards.
6.	The number one hit “When Doves Cry” doesn’t have any guitars in the musical composition.
7.	Prince’s dad bought Prince his first guitar when he was ten years old.
8.	Prince is a vegetarian.
9.	Prince recorded the 1989 “Batman” movie soundtrack.
10.	When Prince was ten he dance on stage with his hero, James Brown.

Infamous Quotes:

“I’ve got more hits than Madonna’s got kids.”

“Cool means being able to hang with yourself. All you have to ask yourself is ‘Is there anybody I’m afraid of? Is there anybody who if I walked into a room and saw, I’d get nervous?’ If not, then you’re cool.”

“You can always renegotiate a record contract. You just go in and say, ‘You know, I think my next project will be a country-and-western album’.”

Hi everyone! I’m your new source on all things Montague Terrace. If you haven’t heard about Montague Terrace yet, it’s the new expansion project taking place at the North Charleston Coliseum. Once built, it will act as a concessions area for Coliseum events and as a standalone venue for private parties, small concerts, theatre, etc. We’ll pretty much be able to hold any type of event in Montague Terrace, but getting to that point has been, and continues to be, quite a journey. One day (in June!) Montague Terrace will look like this…

But for now, it looks like this…

So I’m here to keep you posted on the progress of our new venture. Let me catch you up on what’s happened so far: We started construction back in August of 2010, and since then, the pavers on the South Plaza have been dug up, the Palmetto trees in the plaza were removed (and transplanted, don’t worry, we’re green here too), dirt was poured to level the ground, the steel frame for Montague Terrace has been put up, and the concrete flooring has been poured! For any of you doubters who think that more progress should have been made in the past 5 months, let me remind you that Montague Terrace originally looked like this…

So, I think we’re coming along pretty nicely! We’ve even booked our first show in the venue, Glorious Gershwin! Click here for more information on the show.

Anyway, now that we’re all on the same page about what Montague Terrace is and the progress we’ve made so far, I hope you’ll post comments and questions here. If you don’t have any and just want to be informed on what’s going on in the world of Montague Terrace, check back in about a month, and I’ll have an update for you!

Hi Everyone! As you may know, we are selling season tickets for our 2010-2011 Best of Broadway series. We are super excited because the shows we have lined up for the upcoming year are spectacular. Legally Blonde, A Chorus Line, Spamalot, Spring Awakening and Beauty and the Beast. This doesn’t include three specials we also have planned: Liza Minnelli, Tim Conway and Friends and The Aluminum Show.

There are many reasons to become a Best of Broadway (aka BOB) season ticket holder. Free parking during BOB events, special discounts and offers, preferred seating, access to tickets before they go on-sale to the public, personalized service via our ticket holder hotline and of course….keep your seats year after year!

Don’t know where you want to sit? Well, come out next Tuesday, June 22nd and select your seat. Each year we host an open house party for current and prospective season ticket holders. It’s always fun and gives us the opportunity to talk face to face with BOB patrons. The party is at the Performing Arts Center from 5:30-7:30pm and there will be a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a chance to go backstage and see where some very famous people have autographed our walls…(including Oprah Winfrey!) It’s a really fun night and attendees can see all the seats that are available. No one will be obligated to purchase tickets that night, so please don’t hesitate to attend.

Come on out for an enjoyable evening at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. Visit our website for more information on this or any of our upcoming events, www.NorthCharlestonColiseumPAC.com.

Thanks and we hope to see you there!

Since this is the first post to our new blog, I thought it would be nice to start with a little introduction.

Pictured here is my general manager, Dave Holscher. He is responsible for booking nearly every concert and show that comes to the Coliseum or PAC. He also is the guy in the building that gets to shake hands with the most of the celebrities. It’s a pretty sweet gig if you ask me. He’s a great guy and anyone that has had the privilege of working with him knows that. I’m not saying this hoping for a raise or promotion…and if you doubt me then allow me to share this with you: our employees NEVER leave. That’s right, from GM to receptionist to usher and ticket taker-most of my co-workers have been here since the doors opened over 15 years ago. It says a lot about SMG and Dave, but that whole promotion thing I mentioned…never going to happen or probably not in this decade anyway since no one above me has any intentions of leaving any time soon.

Anyway, back to Dave. I sat down with him awhile back to ask some questions for a video series I wanted to do. The video thing never happened, but I did save the questions/answers. Here goes…

Q: Where did you grow up?

A: Milwaukee, WI

Q: Where did you go to college?

A: University of Wisconsin for my BBA & University of Oregon for my MBA

Q: What was your first job?

A: Ballboy-Milwaukee Bucks, NBA (I was in 8th grade)

Q: How long have your worked for SMG ( for those that don’t know, SMG is the company that manages the Coliseum, PAC and Convention Center for the City of North Charleston)?

A: Since they bought former company, Ogden, in 2000. I worked for Ogden from 1990-2000.

Q: How long have you been working at the North Charleston Convention Center Complex?

A: I came to this building in 1991 during the pre-opening and I’m still here.

Q: How many hours is your typical work week?

A: 45-50, but work is on my mind 24/7

Side note: this has proven itself to be true; Dave often comes up to one of us and starts his statement with, “I woke up in the middle of the night thinking that…”

Q: What is the best part about your job?

A: Meeting and working with so many different people, and knowing that every day is different

Q: Least favorite?

A: Working with promoters that don’t have a clue what they are doing

Q: What is your favorite event that has been here?

A: Eagles in 1995

Q: Any concert that you want to see here that hasn’t been through yet?

A: Rolling Stones

Another thing that is interesting to know about Dave is that he recently started a class at the College of Charleston. The class is called Venue & Event Management and is open to juniors/seniors during the fall semester. Dave teaches this class every Wednesday on the stage of the Performing Arts Center. The idea of the class began because Dave recognized the student’s desire to gain real world knowledge. I have been a part of the class and it is really more of a round table discussion. The lecture begins, but students become so interested in the subject that often times the 2 1/2 hour class is over before you know it. From what I have seen and heard, the students are learning a lot and becoming very involved.

Well, if you have any questions for Dave or about Dave post them here. Check back soon for another post.
